War on Waste – eWaste

Electronics and technology are changing all the time, consumers are purchasing new and upgraded models of everything. From mobile phones and computers to fridges and microwaves, the need for newer models is in high demand. With newer models being produced there is increasing electronic waste. Electronic waste is known as E-waste and refers to anything that has a power cord, plug or needs a battery to operate. Items such as computers, mobile phones, televisions, cameras, video game consoles and microwaves are all e-waste when they are no longer working or of use to consumers. Australians are frequently upgrading their electronics and this means e-waste is growing three times faster than other general waste.E-waste can be used in many different ways. It contains resources such as gold and copper that can be reused. Old fridges contain plastic, glass and metal that can be used recycled to make new phones. From July 1st 2019 all e-waste will need to be recycled and it will no longer be accepted in landfill sites in Victoria. Currently the only law in Australia relating to E-waste in The National Television and Computer recycling Scheme which covers televisions, computers, printers, hard drives keyboards and mice. Electronic waste contains materials like mercury and lead that is toxic for the environment. This is just one of the reasons why it shouldn’t end up in landfill and more of a reason to recycle and reuse. There are many services and places you can take e-waste to be recycled. There are collection services across Victoria for recyclable phones, computers, televisions and batteries. Most local councils will collect larger e-waste such as fridges and washing machines.
